Is your fuel gauge inaccurate? Is it no longer working at all? This is a common problem on older boats, but is easy to fix. The first step is to determine whether the problem is with the gauge or the sending unit.Paaru kannada serial today episode
The test for this is straightforward. First, check that the gauge is receiving 12 volts of power. If there are 12 volts at the gauge, either the sender, the gauge or its wiring is the culprit, so you need to proceed to the next step. Once the wire is disconnected, the gauge should jump to its highest possible reading. If this is the case then the gauge is good and you can proceed to the next step. If the gauge does not reach its maximum reading, it is faulty and must be replaced.Cloudflare waf bypass xss
Another test is to jump a wire or a screwdriver across the sending pin to the ground pin on the back of the gauge. If there is no ground pin, use a longer wire and jump the sending pin to the engine block. When you do this, the gauge should go to its lowest reading.
If it does, it is working properly. If the gauge is good, the next step is to check the other system components, as either the wire running to the sender or the sender itself must be faulty.
Set your multimeter to the Ohms scale and check the resistance within the wire. If there is no resistance as close to zero Ohms as possiblethe circuit is good and the sender is faulty. Most sensors have a mechanical floating arm and a rheostat. As the arm rises, resistance in the circuit also rises to around Ohms. This resistance is what moves the needle on the gauge. On older units the floats may be made of cork.
Over time these floats can lose buoyancy or even sink altogether, causing the fuel gauge to indicate that the tank is constantly empty. In this case, both the sender and the gauge need to be replaced. Left: My new sending unit installed.Marine engine technology has evolved. Turn the key to the "On" position and notice if the fuel gauge moves at all. If the fuel gauge does not move, then tap the gauge with your finger. If the gauge moves, then you know that you have a gauge that is sticking and may need replacement. If the gauge still does not move, then go to next step. Find the connectors on the back of the fuel gauge. Depending on your boat, you might need to remove the gauge with the screwdriver set. On some boats you can just look under the dash and see the back of the gauge.
Wiggle the wire connectors and see if the gauge moves. If the gauge does not move, then notice on your automotive test light that you have one wire with an alligator clip and the other end looks like an ice pick.
Inside the handle of the test light is a lightbulb. Attach the alligator clip to something metal; this is a ground connection. Touch the ice pick end of the test light to the connectors of the fuel gauge. If the light turns on, then you know that the gauge is getting power from the battery. If you are not getting power from the battery, check the connectors and wires back to the battery. If you are getting power to the gauge and it is still not working, move on to the next step. Move to the fuel tank and locate the wire connectors attached to the fuel level indicator plate.
Wiggle the wires and see if the gauge moves. If the gauge does not move, then remove the two wires. Pull the wires far enough away from the fuel tank so that if they were to arc, you would not ignite the fuel.
Touch the two wires together while looking at the fuel gauge. If the gauge does not move, then it needs replacement. If the gauge moves, then your problem is with the fuel level indicator in the fuel tank and it will need to be replaced.
